Public liability or professional indemnity insurance, do you know the difference?
If you’re self-employed, you’ve probably heard of “public liability” and “professional indemnity” insurance, but do you actually know which one you need?
Public liability: covers claims if someone is injured, or their property is damaged, because of your business.
Professional indemnity: covers claims if a client loses money because of a mistake in your work or advice.
Neither is a legal requirement for most businesses in the UK, but plenty of contracts and clients will expect you to have them and honestly, the peace of mind alone is worth it.
If you offer any kind of advice, service, or expertise (which, let’s be honest, most of us do), it’s worth checking whether you’re covered.
