DBS checks come up a lot, but what do they actually tell you?

DBS checks get mentioned a lot, but it’s worth knowing what they actually check.

A DBS check looks at someone’s criminal record, nothing about character or how good they’ll be at the job.

There are different levels too. A Basic check only shows unspent convictions, while Standard or Enhanced (which most roles don’t qualify for) shows more, including spent ones. A clear result just means nothing showed up on record, it’s one piece of information rather than a full vetting process.

Timely one to mention too, DBS fees actually dropped on 5th October. Basic and Standard checks are down to £20, and Enhanced has dropped from £49.50 to £41. Worth bearing in mind if you’ve been putting one off.

If you’re not sure where to start, send me a message.
